About this blog

This trip has been ten years in the planning. We started out camping in a beat up old tow behind camper almost ten years ago. We were hooked from the start. Each trip that we took brought us closer together as a family. I am very lucky to have a wife who enjoys the outdoors as much as I do. I am also very fortunate to have two boys who would rather be hiking, riding, or paddling, than playing video games or watching TV. After a few years in the old camper we upgraded to something a little bigger (27 feet) and a little newer. This time it was only 15 years old as opposed to the first one which was 20 years old. Camping locally at beaches and parks was great. Venturing away on long trips? Not so much. The whole towing thing and long trips with the kids packed into my old pickup was not exactly relaxing. And so began the dream of buying a motor home, where the kids could relax and we could really begin to take some big trips in comfort. I am a big fan of diesel engines and could never bring myself to own a gas powered truck much less a gas powered motorhome. The dilemma that this presents is this. Most diesel powered RV's are what are called Class A. These are essentially buses that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars when bought new. Not being one to sacrifice, I decided that we were not upgrading to a Motorhome unless it was a Class A diesel pusher with a Cummins engine. When we started kicking tires on used coaches, the prices for what we wanted were somewhere around 50K. Our income simply does not support that kind of purchase. We concluded that we could probably go out on a limb and swing 30K. Problem was that there was nothing in that price range. That is until the Sh** hit the fan with the economy. The prices of collector cars, boats and RV's began dropping fast. We decided that it was now or never and began to search far and wide for the deal of the century. After about 6 months, we found it. A 1998 Holiday Rambler Endeavor in near perfect conditions with a very motivated seller. We bought her for thousands less than our 30K limit and we were now in business. Fast forward to today. We are now two weeks away from fulfilling our dream of a full blown cross country road trip with our two boys. Hunter is now 12 and Colby is 8. They are at perfect ages for this. I am not sure who is more giddy about hitting the road, them or us. Our adventure will span this whole country. We will be starting on Long Island and heading all the way to the Pacific in Monterey California. The trip will be five weeks long and include stops in Yosemite National Park, Great Basin National Park, Zion National Park, Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, Moab, UT, Carmel CA, Pikes Peak CO, Breckenridge CO and wherever else looks good along the way.
