Many are lured here by the paradise-kissed beaches where the sun-deprived roast on the sand. The beach mood swings from booze fest to castaway retreat, and from adventure sport to deep relaxation. The tourist checklist also includes thick jungles filled with storybook creatures, and the wonderous Hindu-Buddhist monuments of Angkor. However, good looks and greatest hits aside, Southeast Asia also lures visitors deep into it's heartbeat-paced villages. These are the places that balance 21st-century conveniences with a belief in ancient spirits and smiling Buddhas. Here, children are dazed by your towering hight or blinding skin colour. Experiences like these transform a tourist into a backpacker - a collector of experiences not souvenirs.
