Young Mr. Colee Goes to Washington

About this blog

We decided about six months ago that we would like to take Grandson Kevin to Washington D.C. He's 10 years old now and understands some things with regard to government, and the way our government is running right now, he may know more than most of our Senators and Representatives.

Be that as it may, we decided to take him over Spring Break, the week of March 24-30. We are actually taking him out of school on Friday, March 22 which has been approved by his teacher.

Our plan is to fly to Philadelphia on Friday, March 22 where we'll meet up with daughter Laura for a few days in Philly before venturing to DC on Sunday, March 24. We will see the historic sites in Philly first. Can't wait to get back to some authentic Philly cheese-steak!

We have become proponents of getting a tour guide in large cities at least on the first part of any tour. They know what to see and when to go and are true professionals. Yea, they are a bit expensive, but as I like to say, if I don't spend it my kids will. Besides, we're spending it on one kid and one grand-kid. Then we can go back and visit other sites in depth if we want. We worked with a guy who has worked with a lot of State Farm folks, Anthony Pitch. Kevin Callis put us in touch with him. Great move. He's been quoted on the History Channel and other TV shows.

Then, we got a call from Michael Pitch, Anthony's son, saying his father had some serious health issues and would have to cancel being out guide. However, he put us in touch with a Vivian Porter, who he says is an excellent tour guide. We plan on using her when we are there. Interesting, but wise, she also hires a driver to take us around. I think that's a great call since driving, parking and all the hassle that comes with that would be eliminated. Interestingly, Vivian is comfortable with us giving her a check on the day of the tour, but the driver wants cash and a mandatory 15% tip....whatever.

I began working on the trip back in November and December. I asked Kevin for some help with a White House and Capitol tour. Well that was fine, until something called sequestration cancelled all White House tours...we'll see about the Capitol. Interestingly the "continuing resolution" (you know, the vote to keep our government operating is scheduled to be done before March 27, the week we are there.) If not, lots of government buildings will be shut down. We'll play it by ear change to plan b if we need to.

I got flights for the three of us. We'll meet Laura when we get there to Philly. She actually can take a day or two off from her job with AmeriCorps (you know, the Peace Corps within the US) to be with us in DC. Looking forward to that. I got a rental car, and hotels in both Philly and DC....boy those DC hotels are expensive. Thank God for hotel points.

Getting ready to go as I write this. I'll start blogging Friday.
