JAPAN: my thoughts and impressions after more than 12 (13?) years here, off and on.
About this blog
I cannot believe I have made Japan "home" for as long as I have. I use the quotes, as it can never really feel like one to a non-Japanese. I am a 'gaijin', an outsider, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. We get to avoid many of the expectations, like working late. And the holidays are awesome. (I travel 3-6 months out of the year.) But living in Japan is much like staying in a very comfortable hotel night after night--it's great, but after awhile one longs for his own bed. And while the front desk is very kind and polite, they are hard to make real friendships with. I have lived in Shikoku, Kyushu, Ibaraki (the year best forgotten), and now Tokyo. "Irasshiamse!" Welcome.
