About this blog

David Burton, a Coureurs de Bois, is canoeing up the Rideau Canal, A World Heritage Site, From Kingston to Ottawa From August 09 to 18, 2012, Just like the Coureurs de Bois did 500 years ago In the ealy 1500's AD..

The Canoe Trip will be part of a canoe armada or fleet of 7 canoes and 2 kayaks.

Nites will be spend camping in the wilderness, populated by bears, wolves and wild cats, by the canal locks... We will be canoeing along the World Heritage Site, The Rideau Canal (180 year anniversary - built in 1832AD) just like the French Voyaguers, the Coureurs de Bois, did 500 years ago, when they first came over here, with a few exceptions, such as: 1. There was no Rideau Canal back then, so the canoe portages were a lot longer and harder, 2. There was a lot more trees and Indians shooting arrows at them: That is why the Indians got a bad name at the time... The Indian problem has been taken care of and there is a lot less trees today, now.... 3. The French Voyaguers, the Coureurs de Bois, did not have a logistical support team carrying their stuff for them and cooking their meals for them. 4. There were no camping sites, restaurants, bed & breakfast places, motels, etc. along their canoe route... Note: it is possible to canoe the Rideau Canal from Kingston to Ottawa and not camp - but stay in bed & breakfast places, motels and eat in restaurants - things have changed in the last 500 years. 5, And they did not have a GPS to guide them....

I do not know if I will have access to computers and the internet on the canoe trip expedition to be able to give progress reports and to report on this canoe expedition as it progresses.. However, we will see what we will see and what will be, will be. If you never hear from me again - it will mean that I did not make it...
