About this blog

This is a journal of many journeys. This is a journal to inspire others to become long-term travelers. This is a place to learn about and discuss the reduced budget lifestyle through which you can live the most exotic, exciting, and beautiful life you will ever love to live.

I'm Dave Guilmette and my love and travel partner is Cheryl Mack, and we are the publishers of The Bohemian Journal.

We've been working for months modifying and preparing our van. If you haven't read it already, in January of this year, 2010, we purchased a 1990 Chevrolet G20 Sportsvan, while David was living in San Felipe, BC, MX.

Originally built as a passenger van by a company named Delta, we pulled out the back bench and built a raised (11 Ľ") platform to support a full, or double size mattress. We pulled out the front passenger seat and moved the passenger side captain's chair to the front position so it could swivel back into the open space between the front seat and the bed. If you understand this, it means that we have a 6' by 5' open space with two diagonal facing swivel seats, with easy access to the mini-fridge/freezer neatly install with the 1K Watt AC inverter and deep cycle battery, all just behind the driver's seat. Set up the tray table, lay out the scrabble board, mix up some Pinăritas, and the evening is set for fun and comfort.

By the way, you're going to have to follow our story to get the secret recipe for Pinăritas, Cheryl's invention. It will be revealed in future postings.

We begin by taking our first step; rolling on down to Portland for a friendly visit with some folks there. Then, it's on to South Lake Tahoe, CA, for a few days with more friends.

Next, we'll move on to visit with a few family members in various locations in Southern California. From there, we'll visit friends in Arizona and New Mexico, and we may even make a run to Washington DC on 30 October for Jon Stewart's "Million Moderate March" on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial... yes, we'll probably attend Stephen Colbert's "Freak Out for Freedom" rally held at the same place at the same time.

At sometime thereafter, we'll enter Mexico and explore our way all the way down to Panama where we'll know by then if we still have the chutzpa to continue on to South America.

Now, that's a hell'uva plan...but ya' know what they say about plans...
