Prologue: In Feb 1998 I impulsively joined a co-worker's jaunt to Paris - mostly because he'd found out about round-trip tix from Portland to CDG for $350(!), and with impeccable reasoning had asked, simply: "Why wait?"

The realization hit me a moment after the snap decision to tag along: The obstacles the mind sets up against taking "dream vacations" are usually silly - that often the only true obstacle is...the decision itself.

"Nothin' to it but to do it," as fitness guru Lee Haney would say. Indeed.

Despite vowing afterward to return to that stunning city "Within a couple years at most," it would be a full decade before I would even leave the hemisphere - this time for two weeks in Thailand...
