First Impressions....

About this blog

May 24, 2011 So far San Jose is pretty much like Mexico, the streets, homes, and scenery. I don't feel out of place as much as I thought, it obviously is uncharted territory for me but knowing the language and what not definitely helps. We're technically not staying in San Jose but in Pavas, which is in the outskirts, like Helotes for example. We are in the slums for sure! Unpaved roads, pretty much all of these people's homes are made out of metal sheets and shit. Out dorms are crappy but I think we have it better than the rest of the community. It's all cement and no A/C, no dryer, no sink in the bathroom, no mirrors, twin beds, etc. Like I said, and we have it way better than the other people, not anything like 'USA ghettos', maybe after this I can write a rap album. So Marci the supervisor here seems really nice and smart, the whole community seems to know her. Her eldest son, Julio, who I think is like 19 took us to a shopping center to the bank and to get some "snacks" to keep in the dorms, we ended up spending $50 on top ramen, bootleg Doritos, and Gatorade. He was super nice and patient, it was sort of awkward for me and Jacqueline because he was such a little gentleman, carried out grocery basket and stuff so it was odd but nice. He has two younger siblings, Victor and Stephanie who are the best kids ever! Victor is older and very smart, and Stephanie is the cutest and has so much sass!  So when we got to the Escuelita the kids were so hyped and as soon as they saw "las gringas" they ran to us and hugged us like they knew us! It was so good to see that our first day because aside the uncomfortable living quarters I think they'll so make it worth it! It was pretty funny to be called a gringa, I've never been called that in my life haha! So we arrived right at the beginning of the afternoon session, we pretty much played with them and helped them color. Since we'll be here a couple of weeks we hope we can plan some activities with them, they seem eager to learn because they all were trying to use their English and ask questions. I'm not going to lie they did have a certain "smell" to them but damn after taking a shower I see why their parents maybe don't bathe them every day, its freezing!!! I hope we can get some kind of lukewarm water at least because if I don't I'm going to do it OG Mexican style and boil it and wash each body part one at a time and then rub down with the baby wipes I brought . Oh and last but not least so far no crazy bugs or anything so I'm thankful for that because once I start spotting random, weird bugs I WILL call for a money gram and take my butt to a hotel motel Holiday Inn!

Oh and we're staying by these train tracks that make it look real 'hood right and we're walking to Marci's and some chick is outside with her shirt less man straight rubbing and twisting his nipples...wtf?! Too much sexual-ness for me. It was pretty random, and they weren't even good looking or else I might have let it slide. LOL 
