Today we really did get our early start and were on the road before anyone in the house got moving.  We had to make a stop at the famous Graeter's ice cream in Cincinnati, which thankfully opens at 7am (which is why we didn't leave 6am).  We loaded up on a box of breakfast treats and coffee, and Mom got an ice cream for the road as well.  We were lucky to be be going in the opposite direction of most of the morning traffic so we were able to make some fast progress.

Around 11:00am, we were ready for lunch (having had only sweets for breakfast).  Mom's intuitive knowledge of the interstate came in handy again when we turned off the road in St. Clairsville, OH and found Mehlman's Cafeteria.  This quaint cafeteria-style restaurant features comfort foods, cooked up "like Grandma made" (according to the woman in line in front of us who raved about the place, and also pointed out the cute guy serving food behind the counter).  We ate a delicious lunch in record time and were back out on the blacktop.

Again, with few stop other than gas and the bathroom, we made record time.  We entered West Virginia at 12:18pm (continuing our trend of entering states around noon or midnight), and dodged some minor traffic around Morgantown.  With a constant eye on the map, GPS, and google traffic on my iPhone, Mom led us expertly along the perfect combination of highway and back roads.  We entered Pennsylvania at 12:30pm, ducked briefly back into WV for a bit, and then reached Maryland at 2:40pm, and finally were in Virginia by 6:06pm.

At this point, we were ungry and tired so we called ahead our dinner order to The Cheesecake Factory and swung by to pick it up before arriving at my apartment in Arlington.  It was good to be home, if not for long.  Tomorrow Mom is sticking around to help my roommate and me move the remaining stuff out of our current apartment and into new separate apartments.  This is officially the end of our journey.  I'll be touching up some of these blog entries and adding pictures over the next few days so don't tune out completely just yet.  Thanks for traveling along with us.

Sarah and Laurel,

It sure has been fun traveling with you two. Thanks for taking all of us along for this great American road trip. I wish it did not have to end so soon, but it is good to wind down too.

Sarah, your blog (aka blob) filled me with wanderlust. Wanted to get in my car and drive to anywhere, making those stops and immediate rights that would lead to something interesting and fun. Thanks for the inspiration.

What a great trip you had - loved the adventure of it all, and Laurel's "Hit the Brakes and We'll See What See" travel motif.

I ran across your blog today when I googled De Smet, SD. I read the whole thing and loved it. I hope I can take my own daughter on a road trip like yours one day.
Thank you for sharing!
Emily
