Background Information:

Recently someone referred to the following story as the "Ultimate Sarah Story," which I'm not sure I appreciate, but it does illustrate fairly well why this trip is so exciting to my mom and me.  When I was about 8 (I might have been embarrassingly older than that, but we're going to go with 8), I was obsessed with the "Pioneer Days".  I regularly wore my bonnet around the house and when playing in the backyard; I "milked" my bike each morning, and pretended to churn butter with a broomstick and a cardboard box.  Most notably, I recorded myself clapping and tapping on my knees so that as we drove around town in our minivan we could hear the "clip-clop, clip-clop" noise of horses' feet to enhance the pretend experience of riding in a covered wagon.  When we would get to a red light, the noises would stop as I pressed "pause" on the tape player.  It was great fun, I assure you (less fun when everyone in college heard the story and regularly made "clip-clop" noises when I walked by, but still, great fun overall).

Present Day:

My mom and I are now working on leaving the house. I use the term "working on" because this is an accurate description of how our family prepares for trips.  It takes hours, sometimes days, to prepare.  At the moment, my clothes are packed, mom's are getting there; the car is semi-clean (I'm going to try my best to keep it that way); and we are readying trail-mix, water bottles, and other snacks for the cooler.  I'm also beginning this blog. This is my first attempt at this type of thing but it seems like a fun idea.  We'll see how it goes....

Oh, how I well remember you and Adam "churning butter" on the patio when you were in Boulder, Colorado. You two were such a beautiful and hilarious sight to behold! My sides still split, just remembering the images of you two young "pioneers."

Uncle Mike on

Glad to see you are driving. This is the kind of trip that just has to be a road trip. Have fun!

Sarah Zydney, is by far one of the most interesting and hilarious people on the planet. Her humor is so subtle, it zings you when you are not looking.
I am looking forward to reading about your trip stop by stop.

And that story, is the ultimate Sarah story. No words, only tears when I think about it. You have grown from an awkward and quirky little girl to one of the most kind and giving people I know. Now, on the surface, you could pass for normal.

Enjoy the midwest. I miss it very much. If you drive through Lincoln, NE stop at Stauffers Pie shop. 2nd only to your mothers!

Give your mom my love.
