Mr. Field,
I regret to inform you that Turkmenistan government does not accept visa support letter for October month, due to national holiday 27-28 October.
Our agent says that visa support is not accepted and approved for October month. What will you decide on this?
"Well that sucks"  I say out loud, staring blankly at the phone till the message faded to black.
Suddenly I had a three day limbo period. Tajikistan? Kyrgyzstan? technically i guess any place that would get me in at such short notice.
The most upsetting thing about this was the fact that Turkmenistan was to be the highlight of the trip! The whole point of central Asia was Kazakhstan, which turned out to be way out of budget, and Turkmenistan.  So now the only thing for sure was Uzbekistan.  I had received my Uzbek LoI the other night and was relieved that I would at least be able to set foot on some part of central Asia.
Tajikistan or Kyrgyzstan will be fine, whichever you can get me into on such short notice, thanks
With eight days to go, i have everything else in place. My hostel in Kiev, the tour to Chernobyl.  Advantour will no doubt shuffle the Uzbek itinerary around to accommodate the changes.  Despite the inconvenience, it will still be a welcome change to the pace of work, in fact, the whole "don't come back after your trip" talk with the fixed operations manager came to be a relief.  Do more work worries, well at least not for a month.
