After several hectic local (i.e. local bus) rides we've arrived at Gokarna, right in time for the power blackout (which seems to be an almost daily event here). A small and quiet town with a simple beauty that cannot be observed in the nighttime, at which we arrived. The town is situated beside a large cliff, portruding into the water. The cliff is supposed to resemble a cow's ear and that's why the town is named Gokarna (which means Cow's Ear - in Kannada I presume). There's a beach here with a few fishing boat and a nice (but not very interesting) temple on top of the cliff, and that's more or less sums up the attractions for tourists in this holy town, beside the pleasant atmosphere.
But this is not why tourists usually come to Gokarna. The main attraction lies beyond the cliff, which is only one in a series of many very large lumps of rock portruding into the sea and (as a fortunate side-effect) enclosing a series of small and serene beaches in their midst. Arriving late, we spent the first night in Gokarna but prepared to move to OM beach the next day.
