Where I stayed
Ostello Venezia

Friday, September 4, 2009

Well so much for the forecast of rain while I was in Venice. I woke up this morning to clear blue skies and they stuck around the whole day, except for a brief interlude of clouds in the afternoon.

I was very tired this morning, probably because I had a little too much wine last night. But I needed a lazy day today anyway after all of my walking the past few days. So I stayed at the hostel for a while this morning, working on my blog entries.

I left about 10 am and caught a vaporetto to an outlying island called Murano. It is famous for its glassmaking, but I just thought it was pretty. And I liked that there were walkways all along the main canal. Venice's canals are very pretty, but the only time you see them is crossing them on bridges. It was nice to just walk along the canal in Murano. And there was a really cool glass sculpture in the main square.

There wasn’t much to see in Murano so I caught another vaporetto over to Burano island. This island is famous for its lace-making and its pastel houses. I had seen pictures and knew that they were very colorful. But I wasn’t prepared for the fact that every single house in the town was painted a bright, vibrant color. And each one was different. It was amazingly beautiful. Plus, all of the canals had walkways along them, making it even more amazing. I basically walked along every single canal on the island, twice (once in each direction). I took many, many pictures. It was like a wonderland of color.

All of the walking around made me very tired and I decided to have a late lunch at a Rick Steves recommended restaurant. I got spaghetti with meat sauce but it was very disappointing. It reminded me of hamburger helper. Really.

After I was done eating I felt rested enough to do one more lap of the canals before catching a vaporetto back to the hostel. I had decided that I really needed to laundry because I’m tired of wearing smelly clothes. And there was a convenient self-service Laundromat a few doors down from the hostel. It actually wasn’t a pain. I just took my computer with me and worked on blog stuff until the laundry was done.

My laundry finished with perfect timing because I had just enough time to catch a vaporetto over to a good area to watch the sunset. I went to Santa Elena, a few vaporetto stops east of St. Mark’s Square. And it was beautiful watching the sun set over the buildings near St. Mark’s square.

My next objective was to get my daily dose of gelato. So I hopped on a vaporetto and went to the Rialto bridge, so that I could go to the same gelato place as yesterday. I got the amazing strawberry again, plus a mixed berry that was equally as good. I have a feeling I will be going back tomorrow as well, especially considering it will be my last day in Italy (and therefore last chance to get gelato).

My next stop was Café Florian in St. Mark’s Square, where I once again got a glass of wine and listened to the orchestra for a while. It was very fun again.

I got back to the hostel a little earlier tonight, so I bought some time on the internet and actually posted some blogs before going to bed.

Well, I already mentioned that tomorrow is my last day in Italy. I will miss the food and definitely the gelato, but I’m expecting the temperatures to be a lot cooler from here on out. And I’m very glad about that. I won’t miss the heat at all. And the forecast has changed so the outlook is now sunny.

Tomorrow I will catch an overnight to Vienna, Austria. But I will only be there for the day before taking an evening train to Prague, in the Czech Republic. And I’ll have three days in Prague before heading back to Vienna.

Ciao!

P.S. I'm not posting pictures for today yet. It's getting late and I'm getting tired. So I'll just post this for now. And It will probably be at least a couple days before I'm able to post more updates.
