14:24 I left Penang today after a quick morning walk to pick up my train ticket and get some cash out to pay my hotel bill. I got the bus to the ferry for a free crossing as a walk on passenger. Then walked up and down ramps and steps with my ball and chain rucksack on my person to the train station.
I sat and talked with a fellow traveller until it was time to board, so we walked down the platform and saw a single, lone, solo carriage....this can't be going to Bangkok??!!?? Oh yes. It was. I got on and found my seat and we waited. Apparently the locomotive needed fixing so here we sit, waiting to leave.
19:28 I'm so hungry. I haven't eaten since breakfast and the train was not only delayed leaving butterworth, by an hour, but stopped at some random place and has been here for over an hour with no one telling us what's going on. My seating area, that I bought was invaded by 4 girls so I can no longer spread out whilst other seats on the train are pretty empty so I feel totally overcrowded in my area, hungry, irritable, no p'd off in a major way and just want to eat!!
22:36 I haven't felt this miserable in ages. At immigration all the food shops were shut. The officials then all said I could get some at hat Yai I got off there just nothing was open again. That's when the tears came. I just couldn't believe it. I'd planned to go to the bakery this morning to buy food for the train but it was closed, no matter I thought, stations of every variety are teeming with food shops or people selling things. For the first time ever this has failed to be the case and I'm left hungry with no prospect of even a food car. I got on the train and just cried. An official came to me (who I've repeatedly been asking about food) saying mama mama, and I thought he was asking if I wanted my mum, well I kinda did, with a nice big portion of lasagne or something, I have no idea what he was saying. A few moments later a nice girl came over with a couple of squares of sweet bread, I was very grateful.
The train is running about 3 hours behind so we may not arrive in bangkok until 2pm tomorrow so I have no idea when I will be able to eat. It's probably best to just sleep through this.
