09:05 We started off the day on a half day tour this involved going to Brinchang town to the Chinese Sam Pou temple. We have some Saudis with us, both women in full burkas looking slightly intimidating, except that one of them seems to refuse to let go of her husband at all.

10:07 Next up was the Rose centre with great views and exotic flowers and then to a strawberry farm for strawberry tart and milkshake.

11:38 Went to the BOH tea estate (Best of Highlands) to look at the lovely views of all the tea.

12:58 After that was an Insect and butterfly zoo type things, then a bee farm which was the least interesting of anything as there wasn't really any sort of tour just  bunch of bee hives.

After the bee farm we went straight back to the guesthouse for 1.45 and got on the minibus to Penang. It was just 4 of us the bus so we could spread out.

The road back out of the highlands was the same one we came in on, full of twists and turns and bumps, and views across valleys, not only to dark green forested hills but also quite large areas covered in flashing White strips of polythene which probably was hundreds of strawberry farms like the ones we saw earlier. It wasn't raining, but it was cloudy and low clouds hung over the tops of the hills. After 2 hours of this we passed some huge stone quarries and got onto the motorway where we stopped at 4 for a break, and something to eat as we hadn't yet had any lunch. This service station was the nearest thing I've seen to a Granada/Moto service station in months! A proper brick building with a tarmaced car park, the petrol bit separate and then this building with a central Sitting area with individual places selling (largely the same) food.

It was all motorway from here on, and mostly it rained.

18:06 Finally we arrived in Penang - I was suddenly aware that we were driving over a huge expanse of water, this low level bridge just went on and on across the water. I opened the window to take some pics and felt that the air was hot and damp like I could feel moisture just attaching itself to my skin. It was still raining.

We checked into the familiar Reggae style dorms and had a couple of drinks before the alchol hit me and I fell asleep about 10.30

Caroline on

Your South African relatives will be tutting about the "proteas", Zoe, as the protea is their national flower and these are strelitzias. You're right that they look like birds' heads - their other name is bird of paradise flowers. Can't help with the others, though I think one was a hibiscus. Lovely colours, anyway.
