After the lack of sleep from the night before and then a very long day on my feet, which for legs that have spent 10 years under a desk, and every now and again decide not to work at all, was a bit of a shock... I ended up sleeping till 2pm today! I must have needed it, and feel a whole lot better for it too.

So this will just be a short one today as I didn't do a whole lot as I caught up my energy. However if I had gone out I'd have missed out on what happened next.

I went into the kitchen, looking dreadful (by the way, every picture I see myself in I think I look bloody awful, but I don't care, I'm living out of a rucksack, my hair is unruly, I have no make up on, I'm not sleeping properly and I'm wearing myself out...see if you look sparkly on the same! Anyway....henceforth I do will NOT look good in photo's)
I made myself the tea I so desperately need in the morning, and found that Alla and Irena were busy in the kitchen. They had made dough, and a mix of mashed potato, onions and cheese which was going to be made into pies. I thought this sounded great and reckoned that I'd have my tea and cereal (at 2pm yes) then go out and about in the snow. However, I then got involved in the pie making, and then eating, and talking that I didn't make it out in the afternoon.  Alla is great, she's a very bubbly lady, she doesn't really speak any English, but does gesticulate a lot so you sort of understand, but you can talk away in English and she always seems to know what you're talking about which I find very amusing - quite hard to explain really, but I find it brilliant.

The recipe I am told is thus (mainly for the dough)
put half a litre of hot water in a plastic bowl with 1/3 pack margarine, salt- 1 desert spoon, as soon as as marg melts put half ltre cold water so all gets warm
add a whole packet of yeast to white bread flourmix it upadd sunflower oil as a layer round the bowl and round the doughleave it 1 hour to grow cover bowl in cling film
once done you can take small bits and make small doughy balls and fill with filling before moulding the dough all round the filling and pinching together then flattening out.
we filled with mashed potato, onion and cheese
then fried in sunflower oiil on hob,
Pictures will show the stages I went through and the results. After making about 8 pies, and eating 3 with some vinegary cabbagy stuff, we all chatted, then I came into the sitting area and caught up with my blogging.

20:00 I'm still inside, but will probably go out for a little walk with my room mate to see if there are some pretty night sights as this is sort of my last evening here as I catch the train to Moscow tomorrow at midnight.

So at 9, after a shower, I got dressed up again and went out for a walk with Irena my room mate. I also bought a hat, I needed to as it was -10 outside which I can assure you makes your ears start to hurt after not very long, so thanks Andrew - I should have brought your hat, but never mind!

We went for a little walk over to Catherine the Great, then to a puddings/coffee shop where I had a hot chocolate and piece of cake, and I talked to Irena about Russia and she told me about how her great grandfather who was a great scholar was taken in the night by the army and sent to a camp on the Eastern front as a prisoner (for no crime at all), just disappeared and died of hunger. Apparently quite a common story as Stalin killed millons of people, something I had forgotten from history, so it was interesting listening to her stories about how things were
Then we walked up to the Saviour on the Blood church again, before we both got a bit cold, I forgot my gloves, no, ok, I didn't bring them as I was being hard, but soon regretted it and actually took  my thick socks off and wore them on my hands. I kid you not. Then we ambled back to the hostel and watched a film called Admiral which tells a true story of a Russian naval Officer who headed up the White Army against the Red Army when the revolution happened in the early 1900's. Irena very stoically translated the story most of the way through!!

So now it's 2am again and i must try and sleep so i can get up tomorrow at a proper time.

Best feeling today: Putting a hat on over my ears which had turned very sore in the -10 plus windchill

Worst feeling today: waking up at 11am and realising I still needed more sleep

Best thing today: Pies or cake? Undecided

Worst thing today: cold ears

Most beautiful thing today: the way the snow sparkled as it fell making it look like glitter was falling out of the sky, It was really quite something.
