After abandoning Seattle, it was time to take stock.  Hang out in Portland for a few days, or hit the road again.  Nature wins, I'm off to see the Columbia River Gorge trail from Portland to The Dalles, OR.  You think it can't get more beautiful, it can.  You think you can't say "holy flippin Jeezkowsky" one more time, you can.  The drive from Troutdale to The Dalles is another one to behold.  Another different style of mountain that still screamed "climb me", I stopped and stared as much as the other drive.  But this had bonus tracks.  The Ice Age that made the Gorge also left lots of possibilities for waterfalls.  And there are a bunch!  Every mile or so there are trails to all of them and I tried to hit them all.  On the penultimate one I dutifully photographed and worsipped the waterfall.  Then headed up a paved trail that I believed to be a 2ish mile hike to the next Fall.  Well a wrong turn or something later and I ended up hiking 7 miles of a 5 mile trail that was rated difficult.  In sandals.  Wow, now I know what hiking really is, and why they make shoes just for it.  I kept thinking of my neighbor who fell off these trails and broke her back.  The trail is skinny and slopes toward the edge.  It was beautiful and scary and awesome.

Now it's time to score a place to park before it gets dark.  I love it here, it was 94 degrees today and it will be in the 40's tonight.  Perfect for van sleeping!  Lots of pics, love the Falls!

as unbelievable as though photos are - the real thing must be mind-blowing - the sounds of your marathon hike must have been as wonderful as the sights!

those falls look remarkable!

my leah says, by evidence of the picture the trained bear took of you in front of the falls, you must be out of "good" clothes and had to pick up some rags at a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th hand store - maybe something Zach Randolph left behind when he played in portland.

I was thinking just was steve wrote when I looked at the pictures. The sounds on the hike. The rushing water, the breeze through the trees, the birds and all the other things you must have heard just add to the hiking adventure. I am waiting to see that picture of you in the falls, not just by them!
