At 4:30AM we began our ascent up Mount Masada's Snake Path.  It is roughly 1.3 miles long and 1,000ft climb in elevation.
At the top we took in the views, took pics, and then those who were never Bar/Bat Mitvah'd had the opportunity to do so with our Rabbi Avi Poupko.
14 of us took advantage of the opportunity.  We each read a short Torah portion and took our turn saying 2 transliterated prayers.
Following the ceremony we were given a tour of Masada.  Most took the cable car down to the bottom but 9 brave souls decided to run down Masada.  My quads hurt for the next 5 days!

Like most historic places, Masada contains a bit of controversy and mixed accounts among historians.
It's said that in the first century, about 900 Jewish extremists and refugees of Jerusalem settled here and were eventually surrounded by the Roman Army.  Rather than surrender to the Romans, they organized a mass suicide before the Romans stormed the Mount.
Today, IDF Soldiers are sworn in atop Masada taking oath that "Masada shall not fall again".
