As always happens with our plans, we decided to make a change.  Having woken up to a bitterly cold morning (54 degrees Fahrenheit) and a real snowy chill in the air, we decided to head south.  Even D was keen to make this change and he has bitterly missed the snowy English weather!  This involved not travelling to Georgia (bang goes the trip to the Coca Cola factory) and having a swift journey through Alabama with sunny Florida as our destination.
We stopped for the night at Ozark and were amazed to watch the temperature on the gauge in the car rise almost by the minute.  It went from the 54 degrees at Shelbyville to 84 when we arrived at Ozark, a distance of about 300 miles.  Yvonne liked the idea of staying at Ozark for as tenuous a reason as those for staying a Shelbyville - she remembers an American band from the 70's called the Ozark Mountain Daredevils, although couldn't recall a single song title!
Even though we were travelling rapidly to the south, we couldn't pass through Alabama without going to Montgomery where we paused briefly and Yvonne went to see the civil rights memorial, although the museum itself was closed by the time we arrived.  It was peaceful, sunny and warm and Yvonne found the memorial moving.  The memorial has water flowing over it and there were black freedom songs playing.  It listed the significant events in the American civil rights movement, which included Rosa Parks protest, killings by the Klu Klux Klan and ended with the assassination of Martin Luther King in 1968.
