We managed to cross the South Island, from Christchurch to Hokitika, in a few hours, travelling though Arthur's Pass and some amazing mountainous scenery with crystal clear streams.  It took Yvonne back to geography lessons with glaciers, arcs, cirques, moraine and scree!  Steven did well but eventually managed to be sick, fortunately we were coming up to the viewpoint for a new viaduct, so we pulled in slooshed him down and took some photos!
We arrived at a good campsite with lots of facilities and pitched camp in the mansion-like tent!  We had chosen a six man tent as we needed the room.  Steven is enjoying the freedom of camping although he is finding it hard to adjust to the two hour time difference and is operating on Australia time which means going to sleep between 10 and 11 at night.  The campsite has the benefit of full cooking facilities as well as being a bargain at NZ$15.50 per night.
In the evening we went down to the beach which is only a couple of hundred yards from the campsite where the sand is a grey volcanic colour and the sea was very rough.  We only paddled a little and D decided fishing was out of the question.
We had feared that the weather might be a little cold for camping at night but were pleasantly surprised and a fairly good night's sleep was had by all.  We woke to some very blustery weather in the morning, but brilliant sunshine too, and the tent was struggling under the strain, but after a few adjustments it is now bearing up well!
The night before we left we visited the glow worm dell opposite the campsite, however even the superduper camera couldn't photograph them, so all we have is a picture of the sign!

As imagined
Just as I had imagined NZ to be, Roast dinners and green, mind you not keen on sharing a bridge with trains! Thought I knew the name of the area you are in Nick had dealings with a helicopter guy from Hokitika back in 1997. We are looking forward to summer lets hope we get one this year.

Take care
