Although we have had a minor trauma!
We went for a walk along a local pier/jetty to find a suitable fishing spot for D who has invested in a small rod. He was carrying various baits, rod and essential items for fishing and Yvonne had Steven in one hand and was pushing the pushchair with the Steven essentials (nappies, sunglasses, suncream, toys, etc.) in it. Steven was responsible for Numberjack number 4, this being the Numberjack he chose to take with him to the beach, against parental advice! (Numberjack number 4, to the uninitiated, is a laminated, painted number, with a face on it, made from a printed sheet from the Cbeebies website - Hours of entertainment and easy to travel with too!)
The further you walked out along the pier, the windier it got. Yvonne was concerned with holding on to Steven and was contemplating, as she does in her worse case scenario way, what you would need to do if Steven escaped and went over the edge. It was too shallow to jump in and a long way to run off the pier and along the beach. Eventually D found a place to fish from and whilst he was putting his fishing equipment in place (We can see what's coming next!) the wind caught Numberjack 4 and he bounced about on the pier with D making a valiant attempt to resist the Numberjack's escape plans to no avail. Numberjack 4 was last seen floating in the direction of Fiji.
Steven sobbed his way back down the pier and along the beach until he was finally distracted by encouragement to look for Numberjack 4 to beach (not a hope!) and was given a turtle to play with. By the time we were on our way home he was looking forward to telling Numberjacks 3, 5 and 6 about 4's mission and how exciting it was.
At the time it was one of those moments where comedy meets tragedy as we watched the number bobbing, face up - which made it funnier - out to sea! Unfortunately number 4 was one of his favourites because when number 9 disappeared a week ago, the event went almost unnoticed!
Plans are now beening made for the journey south, without 4 and 9 - first stop Australia Zoo.
Oh - and if you wondered - D has caught some fish - small whiting and flatheads.
