Where I stayed
The Atlanta Hotel

We flew for 7 hours from Tokyo to Bangkok last Monday, arriving mid-afternoon, and took a taxi to The Atlanta Hotel where they, unfortunately, had not received our booking which had been made via the archiac method of faxing after much searching and cost in England!  However, they were able to accommodate us in a spacious family room.

The Atlanta has many claims to fame, one of which is that it has never been refurbished which leaves it looking a bit shabby in places but it makes up for it with its quirkiness and good service - as well as being cheap!

We were fortunate to travel on the Monday as six hours after we arrived, the yellow shirted protesters blockaded the airport and it has remain closed since.  So far the situation hasn't been dangerous for us but has made us change our plans a little.  The problem it caused was that people taking flights couldn't leave and therefore accommodation in Bangkok and down south was hard to get.  The Atlanta were able to let us know on a day to day basis whether we were able to stay.  As we are travelling with Steven we need to be certain of having a room, so we made the decision to get a train to Butterworth in Malaysia as soon as possible, which turned out to be on the 1st of December.

We have therefore spent a week in Bangkok, sometimes resting - D's not keen on the heat - and sometimes braving the streets which are chaotic, to visit some of the sites.

Tomorrow we brace ourselves for the 22 hour journey to Butterworth in Malaysia where we have two nights booked at the Holiday Inn on the beach on Penang.  We have a second class double bunk on the train (second class means it will be on the bottom).  We will then take stock and explore Malaysia further than we had originally anticipated!
