New Zealand is without doubt a beautiful country and some of the flowers and shrubs we have at home grow as wild flowers and plants here. In particular it's the season for Agapanthus which grow in abundance by the roadside. I think the soil must be very acid because a lot of the shrubs and flowers which seem to grow really well, like acid soil. There are hydrangeas everywhere but the majority of them are shades of blue and purple with only a few pink bushes around. Also Pieris does well here and rhodedendron and tree ferns.
And there are magnolias everywhere!
The Pohutukawa Tree is magnificent. There are some huge specimens and it flowers in abundance at Christmas in coastal areas. The shade of the flower varies from crimson to pinky orange. It's known as the New Zealand Christmas tree - for obvious reasons!
We managed to get a few good photo's of some birds we've seen along the way, but sadly we can't identify all of them!
