After being amazed at the mountainous beauty that is Austria, it was quite suprising to drive the last hour before dark towards Vienna in land that resembled back home, green and rolling hills.  I was shocked at how comforting it was to be able to see into the distance and not become distracted by the sheer volume of the landscape.

We got into central Vienna very late and headed straight for a Maccas with all kids asleep we thought we could make contact with Lara and develop a skeleton of a plan for the next few days.  All went well and organised to meet up with Lara tomorrow for a walk and a chat before Mikkel arrived that evening.  After all mail was checked and we were ready to move we decided that we didnt want to pay for a nights accommodation and only be able to sleep, no way would we waste our money on that.  So off we went in search of another dave safe spot, this night nestled in amongst some high rise flat carparks??? I seriously dont get it, but I guess if it helps him sleep better at night all the better.

The next morning we headed straight to the caravan park for a warm shower and a morning of Laundry.  Each time it surprises me how much the skin appreciates warm water when it hasnt had it for a while...hmmm could this translate to other things?  After very long and hot showers we had the Bertha covered in washing and were just finishing lunch when we heard the sound of a familia voice "WWWAAAAWWWWAAAA!!!!" The kids were so excited to see Lara that I think she was almost thrown to the ground in the excitement.

We decided to all go for an explore and a catchup on the hop as the kids really needed to blow off some steam.  Was great to see Lara and actually talk to someone other than Dave in English, you forget how to speak in full sentences and I find myself just listening for the pure enjoyment of understanding the conversation. We walked around the church and small town centre near the caravan park, then as it was getting close to 4 Dave had spotted a park where they were playing the world cup so we decided to head there for a few bevvies and watch the World Cup!!

Lara headed off that evening to get Mikkel and we agreed we would meet up at the station to explore central Vienna. Was suprised as I walked her out at the amount of Mozzies it was just insane, I would be standing there swatting while 20 moe little blood suckers took over the spot that was previously occupied by one mozzie.  I put it down to the area and maybe the river, possibly it had been raining...the list went on, but after listening to the Dutch (they always have the good oil) they said in Summer it was like this over most of Europe, and this was really quite mild!!!!

The next morning we awoke to look at each other covered in spots and dots and smelling like the inside of an aeroguard bottle!! We got ourselves organised and headed into town.  The public transport as everywhere else was excellent and so easy to travel on.  They even had a highway designated completely for bikes!! Sooo wanted to give it a go but as we wanted to get into town quickly I didnt know how quick my legs would be after the long journey the previous day.  Found Lara and Mikkel and headed into town.

The town was just beautiful and it seemed to have a perfect blend of modern and historic, it was very interesting to see how it was all blended together.  There also seemed to be more...street performers, now I use this term loosely as I cant say that I was that impressed with some who thought touching your toes in a green leotard while a mate sat on a chair with a large rubber tongue attached to his head was premium street performance?? Although we did get well and truly absorbed by the rap dancers who were busting out all over the shop, the boys were most impressed and began to rap all over the street, church steps, bus stop, train station, public toilets..etc

We tasted the local cuisine of schnitzel and we all gave it the thumbs up.  As far as new food and tasting different cultures I dont think this one was a stretch for the kids, as Tom said it s just like a big nugget! With devine, moist, aromatic apple struddels in hand we decided to go to a play ground and let the kids loose???I know who could have seen how may wipes would have been necessary! After sitting and staring at this beautiful building (Lara and I as it was 4 the boys had offered to go and check the soccer scores for us) we were trying to work out whether the building was a church or a town hall?? After a while we realised it was covered in crosses ahhhh a church.
With the boys back we decided to get a better look at the building and walk out onto the river (bridge) where we noticed heaps of people going for a walk...with balloons??? Hmmm I smell a festival, then we noticed that there was large signs in English saying free festival!! Hey just our price so at 5:30 we decided to go for a walk (hmmmm anyone else see where this might be headed with 3 small children? No not us!!). Well we found ballons, lollies, chips, music, polka, yodelling, safety demonstrations (I think), punk rock, Billy Idol..etc

After walking for soo long we decided to maybe head for home as we still hadnt fed the kids and tomorrow was Harrys birthday!! So onto the train laden with groceries and goodies to try and make a bday cake and party.  Dave herds us all off and we all look around to realise that we didnt actually get off at the right stop!! So there we were with bags of groceries, noidea where we were, no idea when the next train was coming, three tired hungry children and the clock still ticking AAARRRGGHH! But as I am beginning to learn that if you just take a deep breath think of something else and just wait, something always turns up and its all good!  Eventually we tumble kids into bed and start on preperations for the bday for the following day.

We woke up to cries of "ITS HARRYS BDAY!!!!!" hmmm let me check my watch it isnt Harrys bday doesnt start until 8 try again later!! So at 8 we were all up for chocolate croissants and chocolate cereal and milk, presents and then a run at the park.  After I was able to construct the cake(sponge, cream and Nutella held together with lollies, biscuits more chocolate and more cream) and prepare the feast that Harry had chosen (again how dumb are we to let a 3 year old choose the menu!!)of sausage rolls, chips, lollies.marshmallows.  After all this we decided to take Harry to his suprise of a theme park with roller coasters, merry go rounds, dodgems the works.  Well to say we had a ball would have been the biggest understatement in the world, the kids basically ran from ride to ride loving every moment, while Lara giggled at me as I effortlessly turned into my Nanny, "Is that safe? Hold on! Sit down! Stay together! David is it safe? Leah hold the boys!" I seriously didnt think my heart would hold out when Harry decided to try and stand up mid ride!!! We all had a ride with all the big kids going on rides, although it nearly all came to a bad end on one particular spinning backwards, upside down..weeeggghh took me right back to rides at the Boort show on the Octopus!! But much much much much worse!!

It was a great day that ended with getting three tired kids home skipping tea going straight to cake and then trying to get them to settle down to bed! I am learning it just seems that the obvious is still not obvious enough for me yet!!
