Kinabatangan River is Sabah's longest river at 560km. And is home to a wide range of animals and birds. This is partly because of the river and partly because the river is hemmed in by palm tree. The jungle was chopped down replaced by mile up on mile of palm tree plantations, which now dominate large parts of Sabah much to the detriment of the wildlife.
I took a 2 day, 2 night trip there, staying in a lodge on the river bank. The trip
included 4 boat trips, a couple of night walks and a day walk to Ox bow lake. The people
were very friendly and incredibly helpful. One of guys that runs the place was in Sandakan when we were due to leave the lodge and took the effort to ring two of us up and arrange to pick us up and take us direct to the lodge, rather than us having to get the bus. Haven't come across many people who would go out of there way like that on this trip.
We saw a whole host of wildlife including 3 or 4 different types of monkeys, wild boar,
monitor lizard, crocodile and a many different birds too. It was all pretty impressive
and you can only wonder what it was like before they tore the jungle down and replaced it with palm trees. There are elephants here but we missed them by about 2 weeks. There is a circuit they follow, which is determined by the plantations and it takes about 6 weeks for them to do the circuit. Ox bow lake was really nice too, very peaceful. All in all a great trip.
