Jan. 28, 2007 Monday

This morning we rise early so we can go up to Mt. Kelimutu to see the sun rise over the multi-colored lakes in the volcanic crater. There are three lakes and the mineral content changes so the colors change but generally black, sea green and brown. Ryun and a friend will take us up to the Kelimutu National Park on the backs of their motor bikes (us without helmets). From there we walk to the summit for a panoramic view of the three colored lakes. One is brown, another black and the third a sea green, but mostly black to Arvid whose color blind. [GPS 08 45.863S 121 48.742E] The local legend is that when people die the souls of the young go to the green lake, the old ones go to the brown lake, and the souls of the bad people go to the black lake.

On the way back from the lakes we stop at Jopu, a traditional village, which has a big tribal chief's house that is supposed to be over 500 years old. The lady custodian of the house takes us in for a donation and explains it all. After lunch we ride on the motor bikes to the seashore where the beach is covered with smooth stones about the size of grapefruit. Every time a waves comes in you can hear the stones clunking together in the surf. We watch some fishermen bringing in their boats and hope for some fresh fish we can take back to the bungalows to barbeque. But they have none for sale. One of the fishermen is a friend of Ryun and he says that even when they catch fish they are not sold locally but to buyers from the city of Bajawa. On the way back to Moni we spied some durian for sale. We've heard and read a lot about this fruit. There was a sign on the Pelni boat prohibiting people from bring them on board because the smell may be offensive to others. Irina has already decided she doesn't want any, but Arvid has to try some. The fruit has a thick outer shell and husk with soft elongated blobs of pulp in the heart which is the meat of the thing. He had a couple of the blobs which he didn't think were all that bad, but didn't push his luck by eating any more.
