Yesterday I arrived here by AC-bus from Chennai, it was a pleasant ride of about 1 and a half hours. Before I came here I had my personalised yoga-lessons in KYM in Chennai from 10 am to 12 am. It was wonderful and according to my teacher Ramamani I have very much talent for vedic chanting and should definitely think about furthering my studies in that field or do the vedic chanting teacher course. Well, I will think about it and time will show.
And it really have been 2 very inspiring hours, I wouldn't like to have missed.
So after that I took an 'auto' (motorriksha) to T Nagar Busstand because the AC buses to Kanchipuram only start running from there. I arrived here around 3.30 pm and opted for one of the better hotels, as I really didn't feel like being in the noisy road where the busstand is. And although I am low-maintenance I don't mind spending some xtra Euros on accomodation, as everything else is cheap anyway.
I decided to go slow the rest of the day and keep the walking around for the next day. So it only was resting, showering, internet, overseas call, dinner and watching tv.....thankfully they have satellite tv at the hotel, so I enjoyed 'Matrix' and piece of 'Casanova'.
Today I was getting up just after 5 am because I wanted to be outside early to avoid the midday heat. I walked in the unbelievably quiet roads and was amazed at the monkeys, which run around in groups. They might come town at that time to look for food.
So I went to the Kamakshi temple, one of the smaller temples, after having read about lots of scam at the big temples where tourists will be charged for every little thing....I try to avoid that because it will spoil the experience and I know in Madurai I will not be able to avoid it, as the temple there is the main reason why I am going there.
Kamakshi temple is nice, I walked around clockwise, took some pics and left again.
After that I decided for another not popular temple, where I even was all alone and the priest showed me around and with his little english tried to explain as good as possible. I also got the red-spot-between-eyebrows blessing took pics and had one pic taken of me. I left a little donation for the temple with the priest and after those 2 hours of walking came back to the hotel for having some breakfast.
I realised that I need to find an ATM as I was running out of money, so wanted to do that before the midday heat and so I walked down to Gandhi road, the most busy shopping road, with lots of silk stores etc. Kanchipuram is famous for their silk business, they are said to make the best silk in India.....but I wasn't in any shopping mood and try to keep that for later on in the trip, so I must not carry it around with me all the time.
As it was turning very hot I went back to the hotel and chilled out with writing diary, napping and watching tv.....now some internet time and phonecalls and then dinner.
I think I have seen enough and would recommend Kanchipuram also only for a short visit to see some temples, preferably the not so famous ones, and for buying silk.
Tomorrow early off to Tiruvannamalai.
And I still have to find out why some women here are painting their faces yellow (with kurkuma?)....it does look quite weird.....????

Mein heutiger Tag war ziemlich relaxt. Da ich schon oefter gelesen hab, dass man in den grossen bekannten Tempeln hier als Tourist gerne abgezockt wird und mir das wahrscheinlich die Erfahrung etwas verderben wuerde, habe ich mich zum Besuch von 2 kleineren Tempeln entschlossen.
Ich hatte mir den Wecker gestellt und bin schon kurz nach 6 Uhr los. Zuerst zum Kamakshi Tempel. Der Weg war um diese Uhrzeit ein angenehmer Spaziergang, fast kein Strassenverkehr, dafuer mehrere Affenbanden, die wohl nach Essbarem gesucht haben....das hat mir natuerlich gefallen, sieht man bei uns ja nicht so haeufig, hahaha.
Der Tempel hat sehr schoene Gopurams (die Tuerme ueber den Toren)...hat mir auch sehr gut gefallen. Dann bin ich noch zu einem kleineren Vishnu-gewidmetem Tempel, der wohl sehr alt ist und auch nachtraeglich keine Anbauten mehr bekommen hat...wurde auch aus Stein gehauen, wie die Tempel in Mamallapuram. Ich war die einzige dort und der Tempel-Priester hat mich herumgefuehrt und mit seinen wenigen Englischkenntnissen versucht mir das eine oder andere zu erklaeren. Natuerlich gab's auch noch einen roten Punkt zwischen die Augenbrauen.
Nach soviel Rumlaufen bin ich erstmal wieder ins Hotel. Allerdings ist mir eingefallen, dass ich noch Geld besorgen muss, also wieder raus und ab zur Haupteinkaufsstrasse. Da reiht sich ein Seidengeschaeft ans andere. Kanchipuram ist die beste, tollste Seidenproduktionsstadt Indiens...heisst es. Da ich mir aber vorgenommen hab, das shopping moeglichst lange rauszuzoegern, da ich sonst ja alles von Stadt zu Stadt mit mir rumschleppen muss, hab ich auch kein 'nur mal gucken' riskiert...haette bestimmt eh nicht funktioniert, haha.
Also nur rumgeschlendert, Geld aus einem Bankomat gelassen und dann wieder zurueck ins Hotel, inzwischen waren's bestimmt auch wieder 36 Grad.
Ich hab mich dann fuer einen relaxten Nachmittag entschlossen, der aus schlafen, fernsehen, Tagebuch schreiben und nun Internet besteht. Nachher geh ich noch was essen und das war's dann.
Kanchipuram wuerde ich nur als Tagesausflug empfehlen, um ein bissel Tempel anzuschauen oder Seide einzukaufen. Fuer laengere Aufenthalte nicht geeignet.
Und morgen frueh geht's weiter nach Tiruvannamalai. Da freu ich mich schon sehr drauf.
Achja, ich muss unbedingt noch rausfinden, warum einige Frauen hier sich die Gesichter gelb 'einfaerben', wohl mit Kurkuma.....sieht echt seltsam aus.....????
