Again I'm writing this as a back dated entry as I'm now in New York after getting here last night from Montreal. Anyway, where I last left off I'd just arrived at cousin Sheila's place in Stittsville where I ended up staying for about 10 days all up which ended up getting filled up pretty well with various activities. First up, an Australian friend of Sheila and Pat happened to have 3 young aussies staying with him while I was there so we went round there for dinner and I got to meet Trevor and his Italian/Canadian wife (who's name I can't quite remember). Despite many not so subtle anti Canberra jokes from the aussies in the crowd who were all from Melbourne and Geelong it was a great fun night mixing witha good bunch of laid back fun people. The night turned out to be quite fruitful in the end too as I got an invitation to join Trevor and his bunch for some night skiing the next night which I took up and since it was just a basic beginner hill that we were heading to I decided that it was about time I gave snowboarding another shot. The only other time I'd tried it was about nine years ago and I was pretty bloody ordinary but after a few shaky runs down the bunny slope I was stringing my turns together and starting to look and feel semi competent so I decided it was time to hit the proper slopes, still nothing special but at least there was a decent bit of a slope. Long story short though, despite two aching butt cheeks and a couple of heavily compacted knee caps that left me feeling like a 70 year for the next few days I discovered that I could in fact snowboard and enjoy it so that now I've got another winter occupation to add to the list. The only other major winter sport that I'm missing at the moment is skating which I have tried a couple of time this winter but it just aint happening.
Next on the list of Stittsville festivities was an early Christmas dinner with Doug and his family who always come up to Stittsville a couple of days before christmas for an early christmas together before Doug and his lot go up to Newaygo and Sheila and Pat spend their actual christmas with Pat's extended family. So anyway, Doug, Katie, Ani, Dori, Johnny and Peter all arrived in the evening of the 23rd in time for a traditional and very tasty Turkey dinner which Sheila managed to produce with much effort and don't worry mum, I did help out where I could. There was also of course the mayhem of tearing open the countless gifts that comes when there are 6 kids involved, and I even got a little something from Doug and Katie.
The next event on the christmas social calendar was christmas dinner number 2 at the house of Pat's sister Brenda just nearby in Stittsville, where we were joined by Pat's brother Jerry and his family including his slightly alternative Chilean mother in law who was instantly despised by the resident chihuaha, Pat and co's mother and Brenda's mother in law which made for quite a large but fun gathering. I can quite safely say that the Sullivan clan is just as fun and friendly as the Yeats clan and we all had a great night together, eating lots of food and drinking lots of wine, laughing at some somewhat vulgar but funny comments from Marg (brenda's mother in law) which you had to be there for and then to top it all off the night was ended with a game of Texas hold'em which was cleaned up by yours truly but unfortunately we were just playing for fun, no money involved. Throughout the night the topic of hockey and the NHL and the Ottawa senators came up a bit and the Canadians were quite surprised at my interest in the game considering it doesn't rate a mention back in Aus and then as we were walking out the door at the end of the night Ross (Brenda's husband) handed me 2 tickets to the Ottawa Senators vs NY Rangers match the next night, 4 rows back from the glass!!! Needless to say I was well chuffed as that was one of the things on my list for Canada was to get to an NHL game and well I certainly couldn't have asked for much more than. So the next night was spent with Pat watching the Sens demolish the Rangers 6-2 and watching Pat's niece Stephanie's ex boyfriend Chris Neil roughing up the Rangers to my enjoyment.
That pretty much sums up most of the Sittsville events, although I did catch the end of one of Connor's hockey matches in which his team absolutely dominated and he even got himself a goal with some very impressive stick work for an 8 year old.
I'll wrap up there as I'm about to run out of time yet again, hopefully I haven't dragged this on for too long although I've still got a lot to fill in as it's now 2 weeks after the events I'm writing about so I'll hopefully be on to that soon.
