Well here I am getting back up into the fairly far north and it's certainly showing. For starters I think it would probably qualify as the coldest weather that I've had so far this year although Shanghai and Hangzhou come pretty close. My only hope weather wise is that it might drop just a few degrees cooler so that I might score my first snow of the year, and apparently they usually get their first snows up here in November so here's hoping. Anyway, Tallinn seems to pretty universally get the rap for the best preserved medievel old town in Europe and from what I've seen that would appear to be a fair claim. So far I've loved all my experiences in Eastern Europe and the thing that has consistently struck me is the beauty and charm of the old town centres which every city seems to have held on to. Tallinn apart from the others though does seem to have a bit more of an authentic feel to it. I've been here for two and a half days now and am heading south tomorrow but so far my time has mainly been spent wandering the streets and I have checked out a few museums about the towns history and in particular the history of occupation in Estonia. From what the museums say Estonia has really only been independent for about 40 odd years out of the last 800 or so, and again in visiting the museum of occupation which focuses on the Soviet and German occupations of the last century I developed an even further appreciation for how lucky I am coming from Australia. Everywhere you go in Europe you are constantly reminded of the countless conflicts that have affected this part of the world for thousands of years with just about every corner having been at some point in history brutally oppressed by some greater power. While Australia is by no means perfect we really can't complain too much about the setup we've been able to enjoy. I haven't been able to sample too much of the nightlife here unfortunately as it is a bit of a quiet time to be visiting and hence there seems to be a distinct lack of interesting people with whom to go out with from the hostel which means that I'm pretty much done right now, that and I'm almost out of time yet again so catch ya's all later.
