Yesterday would have to have been one of the more interesting days that I've had recently, the main points of interest were 5 different car accidents, 1 fatal and random meeting with a workmate from Canberra. It started off when I was walking in the middle of town in Porto on my way to the internet when I noticed a big crowd of onlookers crowded around a bus, a scooter and a couple of police cars with the area marked out with police tape. It turned out that I was witnessing the scene of a fatal accident for the first time in my life where apparently the bus had run over the guy on the scooter, I won't go into the details of the scene but it was a little bit disturbing on not really the way you want to start the day. Anyway that was only the start of it because on the bus down here to Lisbon yesterday afternoon I spotted no less than four accidents that had happened in the other direction on the highway, illustrating the bad road record of the portugese.
Onto more pleasant things go I got quite a surprise when I arrived in Lisbon. After getting off the bus and getting my things together I was just starting to make my way across the station when I heard someone call out my name. I was thinking 'hang on a second I don't know anyone in Lisbon' and when I turned around there was a girl waving to me who I knew I recognised from somewhere but couldn't quite place. It turned out to be Holly Keenan who I worked with at the Yacht Club last summer before I left home. The bundah people reading might also know her as Tess's younger sister. So anyway, that was a completely random meeting as I certainly had no idea she was travelling so we had a good chat for a while going over our various travels before eventually getting down to the business of finding my way to my hostel. After arriving at the hostel I got chatting with a couple of americans, a belgian and a brit before heading out to a club called Lux at about 1130 thinking that it was getting late and that we'd better get a move on. However when we arrived there we were informed that we couldn't get in until midnight and that it wouldn't be busy until at least 2:00 anyway. Sure enough when we returned a couple of hours later we found the place still wasn't that full and continued to fill up for another couple of hours and at 6:00 was as busy as ever but soon after that I decided it was bed time and made my way home but apparently the place keeps going until 9 or 10 in the morning, a bit different from lil' ol' Canberra anyway.
Needless to say after such an early morning I've been a little bit slow getting going today so can't really report on anything of Lisbon itself but I'll get out there now and see what I can find.
