Pompeii is an ancient city that was destroyed by Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD.  It wasn't until 18th century when the city was rediscovered and now provides key insights to roman civilization.  Day trip to Pompeii is ideal from Naples and you can view some pics of the city.
