Bodyworlds is a collection of real human bodies which have been plasticised and cut apart to display various body systems etc. Some were just skeletons, others showed all the muscles, other the different organs and things like that. In some ways it was easy to forget that they were once real living people who had agreed to donate their bodies to the exhibition after death, but the thing that made it real for me was seeing fingernails and toenails and hair and things like that. There was one guy who had been cut into about five layers going from the front of his body back, each showing slightly different bits. But on one of his arms there was a tattoo still visable. Things like that reminded us that they were once living people. There were other displays such as a man riding a horse, both of which were showing all of their muscles so you could compare the size of the human muscles to those of the horse. The rider was also holding each of their brains in his hands, so the sizes could again be compared.
The most disturbing bit was probably the fetus room. Some people chose not to enter that room because they thought they might find it too uncomfortable. It displayed embryos and fetus' at the beginning, middle and end of the first 8 weeks, then after that one every 3 or 4 weeks. Again it was weird to think that each of the different displays was a growing human, so that meant many mothers and their unborn child who had died. There was also a full display of a mother lying down propped up on one elbow, and her belly was open showing an 8 month old fetus inside. It was pretty amazing to see.
Other things that were displayed were the bones in the ears, livers, normal lungs and lungs ruined by smoking, hearts, brains, organs with tumors, sexual organs etc. Unfortunately we weren't allowed to take any pictures in the exhibition, but if you want this site will tell you more about the displays and how they were created and things like that.
These pictures are just of on the bus on the way home - we have to think of something to do to kill our second 3 hour bus ride for the day!
