16th June 2008:

Vientiane to Luang Prabang via Lao Airlines

We have only allocated 7 days for Vientiane and Luang Prabang. Coupled with that, we have ambitiously planned to leave Luang Prabang for Chiang Kong in Thailand via the mighty Mekong. With all these agendas in mind, there is no way we are going to spend many hours of the road from Vientiane to Luang Prabang (LP).

We know we can fly by Lao Airlines from Vientiane to LP, but there were many online forums discussing about the safety of the local airlines, coupled by the fact that one cannot book the airlines online before this. Since we only have 1.5 days in Vientiane before leaving for LP, the question of whether we would have enough time to visit a local travel agent to book our flight become another relevant issue for us to consider.

After mulling over all the pros and cons and after finding out that Lao Airlines now (since October 2007) allows bookings to be made online, we proceeded with our booking of our flight from Vientiane to LP. Being a thorough researcher as I am, this decision was also made after my visits to some online forums which have discussed about the different types of aircrafts currently used by Lao Airlines and after reading some testimonies by passengers who have travelled the route before.

And our verdict of the airlines? It was a good flight for us, quite up to the expected standard of small aircrafts. We felt safe and we enjoyed our short trip to LP.
Upon our arrival at LP, we were greeted by Kit the driver (and brother of the lady owner from our lodging) and the owner's son, a smart little guy called Fly, who speaks good English.

Khoun & Khone (some call them Khone & Kaan) Bungalows (K&K):

While researching for a place to stay in LP, we found out that budget accommodation is aplenty in this town. However, in a town as laid-back as LP, we wanted to experience something different, we want to live like the locals do and we want to spend time to talk to the locals and to ask a lot of questions about their country, their culture and their problems, despite knowing that "Bo Pen Yang" (No problem) is often used to describe their laid-back attitude.

So, we did our research on Tripadvisor and instead of looking for hotel or bed & breakfast, we searched under their "Specialty Lodging"   section and discovered this gem - K&K Bungalows, situated about 5km outside LP town and run by a husband and wife team.

The concept of this lodging is rather unique - they have about 6 to 8 wooden bungalows built on a large piece of land. Each bungalow has its own bathroom and toilet, built as an extension to the bedroom, with transparent roofing which allows for natural lighting coming from the sky.

We took a bungalow built on stilts and situated on the higher grounds at the end or back of the land. It was built on completely natural setting with lots of trees and bushes which was clear to make way for thus building. Given its location, one is bound to find a spider or two in the bungalow, some ants looking for food but minding their own business - so, if you are one who is not comfortable with these, this might not be an ideal place for you.

For us, it was perfect - it was exactly what we have hoped to experience. We have a comfortably large room with mosquito net, a balcony where we can sit and hear all the creatures from the surrounding greeneries, a large bathroom with hot water and a modern toilet.
The best thing about this place is the fact that we were treated like one of the family's friend who has come for a visit, the gathering place being the main airy building where meals are served and where most of the workers and the owners can be found should you ever need anything.

We instantly fell in love with K&K and its surroundings - as evidence by our many pictures taken during our stay there. And it only costs USD15 per night to stay here - breakfast included.
