In fact, I've been to Bremen before. When I did my first backpacking tour around Europe, I came down here on a lark after visiting Copenhagen, not quite able to stomach the 10-hour train trek up to Oslo as originally intended (with plans to haul straight back to Munich afterwards . . . yikes!). For some reason I wasn't all that impressed with the place at the time. Maybe it was the bleak, grey weather in the middle of summer, maybe it was the comparatively tiny old town. Whatever the case though, I've always said that I'll never write off visiting a place a second time.
And it turns out, it's actually a much more pleasant place than I recall it being. It's still fairly small in terms of sightseeing attractions compared to other, similarly-sized German cities. But the Marktplatz, with its UNESCO-listed Rathaus and medieval Roland statue, is extremely attractive, and the Art Deco brick lane of Böttcherstraße is equally intriguing to explore. There's even a wee neighborhood of medieval houses just off to the southeast of the town center called the Schnoorviertel that I somehow must have missed the first time around.
So, whaddya know? Sometimes it's well worth giving a place another chance.
