It turns out that the whole of Central Europe all the way west to the British Isles is in the middle of an unseasonable heat wave. Record-setting temperatures have been set across the region and, with the Mediterranean mostly seeing rain and cold, London is finding itself considerably warmer than Athens and Rome! That means that we're still benefitting from beautiful clear skies and highs around the mid-20s Centrigrade
Despite those positives though, the daytrip didn't exactly get off to the best start. After arriving in Salzburg, we wandered our way down to Mirabell Palace and gardens for a look around. In the middle of shooting pictures, Mayu's memory card suddenly crashed inexplicably. With her other memory card full, this meant that she had no way of taking more pictures with her camera. Not good. So, we swung by a local camera shop to see if anything could be recovered. No deal. It turns out that the €14.99 card that she got the other day was cheap in more ways than one. The shop owner was quick to highlight this point as well, I might add. Not surprisingly, this put a serious damper on Mayu's Austrian experience. She decided to buy a disposable camera for the day, but it didn't do much to make up for the 100-odd pictures she lost.
The day would have been (and largely was) very pleasant otherwise. We hoofed it up to the Hohensalzburg fortress overlooking the town in the early afternoon, which provided magnificent views over the city in the beautiful weather. Not to mention the Alps: still snowcovered and dazzling on the southern horizon! The rest of the time we explored the backstreets of the old town and paid a visit to Mozart's Geburtshaus (birth house). Somehow I neglected to go to the latter on my previous visit, so I thought we were somewhat obliged to go. Having visited though, I'm not sure that we wouldn't have been better off going to his Wohnhaus (living house), which is apparently more extensive. Unfortunately, we ran out of time. Oh well.
We're off to Prague in a couple days, so for tomorrow and Monday we'll be sticking around the Munich area.
