Where I stayed
Dixie College Inn, St. George, UT
Early departure- shuttle at 7am. Flight delayed until 10:30. Small plane- turbo jet - Canada Regional plane CRJ700. How many passenger? 2 by 2- maybe 20 rows? Anyway, small overhead s means those carry-on bags don't fit. Everyone's checking them at the door. I give mine a try. Taking my camera bag out of my wheeling backpack shrinks it down a bit, so I'm all aboard!
Arriving at Salt Lake City about 1 pm local time with plenty of time for my flight out at 3 pm. Good thing, since I have to trek from B gate to E gate and need to grab some lunch. Luckily I ate before the flight out- all they offered on the flight was snacks.
Even smaller plane- turbo prop this time. Even smaller storage space. My stuff still fits when disassembled. Take off from SLC viewing plentiful snow on the mountains. Rise up through clouds back to some sunshine. Toward St. George, the two personalities begin to show- green valleys encroaching up slopes to mountains on my right and the moon-like dry, sharp edged cliffs and crater on the left, showing off their layered colors.
St. George airport is small, cute, and obviously new. At the single baggage collection area I met a couple who are also heading to College Inn for a RS hiking tour. They were taking the airport shuttle, for a fee. As I grab my bag, a young man asks if I'm Wendy- yep, so we head off for the RS shuttle and the Inn. I'd arranged for the pickup and was very glad to see him.
Paul informed me my group had already headed out for dinner, but I could hitch a ride with the hiking tour group that's also assembling at the Inn. I rush to my room, drop my stuff, and run to make the bus. We're doing dinner in one of the banquet rooms in the student union at Dixie State College. I'm surprised to find that my group has 44 people!
We swung by the Mormon Temple on the drive back. It gleamed bright white. We notice there was water running down the curb - what's with that? Back at the Inn, we relax in the lounge area. I noticed a woman using an iPad at a table. I have mine in hand since wifi is better in the lobby. I joined her and we spent time happily comparing and sharing apps. So ends the first day.
