We have to leave Hoi An today. We all have fallen in love with this little town and our lovely hotel. We drive north, retracing our passage from Danang 2 days ago. We stop off at a China Beach location to frolic in the water and sand. I pick up a few shells as well. The sand is very soft and the water is just right- refreshing but not too cold. There's not too many folk about- just us tourists.

We continue on, finally reaching the hazy mountains and climb up to Hai Van Pass. Photo op and WC stop. Old french fortifications. The photos are washed out with the haze. And its still pretty hot up here.

We stop at the Long Co resort further north. It consists of little "villas" next to the beach. We eat in their dining hall- high ceiling, dark old teak (?), cool enough with just fans. Super seafood including mussels- I take along a shell.

We make two stops before reaching Hue City at tombs of former kings. They both show very heavy Chinese influence in style. Quite a difference from the Indian influenced structures in Cambodia.

We finally arrive at the hotel, which was built in 1901- old style colonial elegance right on the river across from the Citadel which we'll see tomorrow. Our room is at the absolute end of a hallway that's not air-conditioned. The room is very wide, with a line up of chairs against the far wall/corner. The tv is pretty far away from the beds- needs a 52" screen!!

Short stop before dinner at the Royal Park. Again, Chinese influence in small rock garden courtyard. Guests have option of dressing up as court mandarins and emperor. We pass. It's supposed to emulate a royal feast with something like 15 courses. But a "course" could be just a fried spring roll. The dishes are decorated with food carvings- mostly birds. All the presentation, but the food isn't much.
