We are just about to set of to some of the Fijian Islands. There are no phones, running water or reliable electricity. Why do they have no modern conveniences? you ask. Anywhere else in the world I would say it was down to poverty, here I would say it`s because the Fijians just can`t be arsed fitting it.

They have a popular drink here called Kava. It is made by getting some young native girls to chew on the root of the plant until it becomes a paste. They then spit it into a big bowl and mix it with water. Everyone then sits around and drinks it out of half a coconut shell. In remote areas it is considered a sacred ceremony. In places frequented by tourists its more of an excuse to sit around and have a laugh.

It is not alcoholic but more of a narcotic that makes your body very relaxed while leaving your mind fully active. The hangover produces extreme laziness. If ask a local what time something will happen they will say "Fiji Time" i.e. whenever they get round to it. Nothing gets done in a rush.
