As a man traveling through S.E. Asia, you get used to getting a good deal of attention from women of a more solicitous work background. Walking past massage parlors, walking past escort bars, walking down the street, buying a bottle of water from the store...you get the idea. On occasion they might playfully grab your arm or touch your shoulder. As with the touts, you kind of become numb to it and fire off the automatic response - smile, "No, thank you."
We arrived in HCMC (Ho Chi Minh City/Saigon) on a Saturday night. We originally planned to stay with a couchsurfer but timing didn't work out. She invited us to join her at a bar where she and her friends would be DJing. We stayed out for a while, enjoying the company of a familiar crowd: English teachers…and also the $2.50 Johnny Walker Black on the rocks’.

In the morning we were both in a bit of a state. I went to the store to get water. On my way back, one of those women I was just mentioning called to me from the back of a motorbike…

"You wan massa?"

“No, thank you.”

“You wan come wit me?”

“No, thank you.”

She hopped off the bike and stumbled over to me as I kept walking.

“You come wit me.”

“No.”

She touched my arm which I took to mean (as has always been the case) that she was just about to walk away, kind of like a last ditch effort to get my attention. Then she touched my shoulder. In a split second she was getting grabby and before I had time to step away I felt her hand slip into my back right pocket. I spun around just as I felt it and she quickly swung her arm behind her back.”

“Give me back my money.”

At this moment we made eye contact for the first time. Her eyes we glassy and bloodshot, she was bearing her teeth (though I think this was a side effect of a drug as it was a result of her jaws grinding), she looked like she hadn’t slept in days, and she had something on her face that looked like food or dried spit, I couldn’t tell. For a split second I got an image of this crazy witch riding on the back of her friend’s scooter with her tongue sticking out of her mouth. Anyway...

Her left arm swung around and she flashed a few bills in my face.

“Dis my moneeeey!!!!”

As we stared each other down, my empty fist began to clench and I thought to myself:

"Hit this bitch.”

A quick analysis of the situation told me one of the following was more likely to be the outcome than the one I wanted (hit her, take the money, walk away): Her friend on the bike (whom I hadn’t really seen or sized up) would get involved; One or both of them was armed with a knife; The locals did not see what really happened and it would probably have been my word against hers.

The bills I saw in her hand only added up to about $4 so I decided to let it go. The following day, another person staying at our hotel had their camera ripped from their hands by a guy on the back of a scooter.

Not the ideal way to start off in a new country, but it could have been worse.

And that is the story of how I was robbed by a crack whore in Ho Chi Minh City.

Maybe if you contact the scooter bandits union you could get a picture of the crack whore for your blog. Apparently they now have a camera. Just a thought.

Well Ryan, she sounds like a lovely lady. Perhaps this was just her way of letting you know she's interested. She has now taken that $4 and purchased a wedding ring, a wedding dress and a summer home. Sounds like you have found your one true love. Keep up the good work! xo

Sorry to hear this story Ryan. What a bummer. Glad it was only a few bucks. Lessons to learn in Vietnam.............carry everything in a front pack or under your shirt. :(
