And so itīs on to our last destination and last week in South America. No more long bus trips which Pa was delighted about. After the mayhem of Salvador we were looking forward to a week relaxing on the beaches of Florianopolis. It didnīt start off too well though. As it was cheaper, we got a flight from Salvador instead of a bus and landed in the airport around 12 midnight, and as we had nothing booked as everywhere was booked out we ended up sleeping on the floor of the airport for a few hours. In the morning we went to the main bus station where we met a fella who offered us a hostel for 2 nights for a good price so we took him up on the offer.

Florianopolis is an island in the south of Brazil connected to the mainland by a bridge. Itīs a really nice island, where most people come to relax on itīs numerous beaches. We headed to the east, as most people do, to the more laid back part of the island. Our base for the week was a nice little fishing village called Barra de Lagoa. There is a really nice beach here that stretches 14kms. The first hostel was an absolute shithole & was like an oven even at night. After 2 days of torture there we changed to another hostel in the village called the Backpackers Sharehouse. This was a great hostel with great views right on the doorstep of the beach.

While in Barra de Lagoa we met up with 2 lads we met in Rio, Rob from near Belfast & Alan from Glasgow. One night while relaxing on the rooftop we noticed a crowd gathering at the beach soccer pitch in front of the hostel. There was a match on between two local teams so we went for a look. They must have been rivals as they were kicking lumps out of eachother & werenīt holding back in the tackle. It made for great viewing for us. Afterwards a few locals started up their own match & we joined in for an hour or so.

Most days were spent either relaxing on the beach or in the hostel. The days here were very hot, but almost every evening there was a torrential downpour with thunder & lightening. One of the good things about this hostel was they had a lot of surfboards, boogie boards, canoes etc...which were free for us to use at anytime. Pa & Steve made good use of the surfboards & boogieboards.

Pa spent his last weekend in South America on his sick bed, he was coming down with something so wasnīt in the form for much. Steve spent his last day surfing like a pig in shit. Brian went to an all day pool party in a class outdoor club called P12. On the Monday morning around 4am Pa & Steve headed to the airport to catch their flight to Sydney via a night in LA. Brian spent an extra few days on the beaches before also catching a flight to LA where he spent a while in California before meeting up again with the lads 2 weeks later.

So that was our trip to South America. We canīt believe how quick the 5 months went
