We somehow managed to miss the stop for Curitiba bus station on our local bus so had an eventful trip finding our way back to catch our bus to Florianopolis.
Florianopolis is the playground of wealthy Brazilians who aspire to own a flat or house on this large lush hilly island, Ilha de Santa Catarina. Originally the destination for emmigrating Italians the town has a very European feel and a plethora of Italian restaurants. We found a delightful bistro/deli for our first evening that soon filled up with Brazilian playboys and their young wives. The guitarist no doubt soon helped us make friends as we sang along to the great hits by Tears for Fears that we encouraged him to play! The waitress of course rewarded him with a beer from our table in true playboy style. We made two day-trips to two of the many beautiful beaches, one in the southern Nacional Parque, and walked the adjacent headlands to see the surfers battle the crashing Atlantic waves. Another highlight was the indoor market and the bustling food stalls, quite an institution. And an experience for the unitiated traveller! We left Florianopolis by night-bus to Foz de Iguacu.
