Where I stayed
We had to unfortunately spend one night in Fort Lauderdale and catch the 1pm Bahamas Air flight the following day. We head to the airport, nervous, excited, scared! To my surprise, my good friend Leslie shows up at the airport! We sat and chatted for a while before heading to the gate.
The airplane heads towards the runway, Nik and I are looking at each other and holding hands, saying “OK, here we go….almost home”, when the Captain comes on the loudspeaker and announces we have to turn back to the terminal as the plane has mechanical problems and everyone will have to deplane
Approaching the island, I gazed out the window and looked at the familiar surroundings, and I had serious mixed feelings. It was good to be home, of course, and we were anxious to see family and friends, but we also felt a bit sad and disoriented that our wonderful trip was finally over. I had heard from many travelers coming home from long trip experiences have a bigger shock on their return home that when they first went abroad. I wondered how hard it will be to return to "normal" life or if I wanted to return at all! I know that the time, money and effort we spent on exploring this wonderful world was worth more than I ever thought possible and we would do it all over again.
I was shocked to see how much my niece, Makayla had grown. She was not the same little girl we left behind, she looked like she was 16! My parents looked wonderful as always and it felt like we had just seen them a month ago, it certainly did not feel like one year! Our dog, Chico, was confused and excited, is that really them?
It was actually nice to come home to an empty house. I could take my time getting my stuff out of storage and putting everything back in its place. I would probably find more stuff to get rid of. I have certainly realized that you do not need a lot of things to be happy. Actually less is more!
I think the first two weeks being back home was the hardest for me. I wanted to be home but at the same time, I wanted to be out there still traveling! Its also very hard to answer questions about my trip. How do I possible sum up an entire year into one sentence?
