Where I stayed
It was so hot and humid and it didn’t help that we had to climb these steep stairs for 5 minutes to get to the top where our bungalow was located. Thank god they had a motorized cart for our backpacks so at least we didn’t have to carry them up hill. Our bungalow was on the sunrise side and our room was huge and very comfortable.
They had a restaurant with a great view of the harbour of the island. Our first stop after having lunch was the beach for a dip in the refreshing water
Nik’s Christmas present was getting certified in scuba diving. So the next day, Nik started his PADI scuba certification with Paco who was from Italy and a super nice guy. Nik was so excited to take the certification and he studied hard every night. He got the highest score of the 3 students in his class so I was proud. I took a refresher course and when we went in the water to perform the safety exercises, I remembered why I had not been scuba diving for the last 18 years. I had a bit of a panic attack when we had to take the mask off and just breathe through the regulator. I felt like such a old fart when Nik and the 2 young boys did it with no problem. But I was determined not to give up so I continued to breathe and relax and then I finally did it. I felt so good that I could still conquer my fear.
After the third day, I went out with them on 2 dives. I was too buoyant and kept floating to the top. Paco kept pulling me down and adding more weight. He told me it was because I was breathing too fast
On Christmas Eve, we showered and dressed in our best clothes (the cleanest, hahaha) and headed to a restaurant right on the beach. Nik ordered a big fish and I had prawns. It was a good meal and we had ice cream shakes for dessert. It didnt really feel like christmas since we weren't together with the family!
After dinner, we headed to the "Beach Resort" to watch the show of lady boys (men dressed as women). I was told that some Thai men choose to dress like women but it has nothing to do with their sexual orientation. They were funny performers in their fancy dress and bad makeup. They had an excellent fire show and one of them was a 12 year old boy. He was so cute! Nik gave it a shot too but it was certainly harder than it looked. We ended the night with fireworks and setting off candle lit balloons into the sky. It was so beautiful watching all of them disappear into the night sky.
When we got to KO PHI PHI it was just like the Bahamas but it was in Thailand. Then we had to walk up these high steps
We went to go sign up for the 3 day course for scuba diving. They ask me if I wanted to start to today and I said “ yes” . I watched a movie about scuba diving and I had to watch 5 sections of how to put your gear on and the signs underwater. During my course, I was doing good and I really enjoy it and I was so relieved when I passed the exam. whewwwww..... We stayed on the Island for 5 days, we even spent Christmas Eve having dinner right on the beach. Then we watched fireworks and the locals fire dance, it was outstanding. I wanted to do it and I tried it without the fire but it was hard. We didn’t go to bed until after midnight, it was a cool night.
