Our InterRail ticket became valid on April 9th and we decided to stop off at Avila on our way to Salamanca. Avila is a walled city and is where St. Teresa was born. It is worth spending a couple of hours here, but it is best seen from afar. We walked to the "i cuatro posti", 1km outside the city from where the view of the medieval walls and battlements was outstanding. Paul says "The view is just a good from the train".

In Salamanca we stayed at the Hostal Residencia Los Infantes (6420 ptas) right oppostite the station, chosen for its location which was an important point since the only train from Salamanca to Porto was at 4am. Will we ever learn to check the facts before we travel?

Paul took the role of tour leader in Salamanca; probably due to the fact that our map had two tours clearly marked - The blue line tour and red line tour!

Salamanca´s Plaza Major (much better than Madrid´s) is a great place to chill out in the afternoon with loads of university students and travellers. Nick would love it... you can take your shoes and socks off, sit on the floor and drink red wine (which incidently has now replaced our water supply).

We had to pay and make reservations for the 4am train - a "requirement" which was a complete waste of time since our seats were occupied by a group of intoxicated Portuguese men who had no intention of giving up their spaces, reservation or not! We resigned ourselves to sleeping in the corridor, but the ticket inspector soon found us some seats with some other "filthy backpackers". One guy decided it would be more comfortable to sleep on the overhead luggage rack, whilst another slept on the floor.

Paul left his huge american hat on the train (Thank God), Hopefully the local children will no longer find it necessary to bellow the theme tune to Indiana Jones as we pass!

Onward to Portugal....
