After a family orientated France, we flew via London Stansted to Lake Balaton, Hungary last Thursday and enjoyed some relaxing times both at the lake and in wine country for just over a week.
Keszthely was our first port of call, a pretty lakeside town, with a lovely church and cobbled stone streets. We stayed in a nice 'pension' (guesthouse) and this was also where we celebrated Mandy's 29th birthday. In Keszthely there is a fab castle called the Festetics Palace, really well preserved - we had to wear tie on 'slippers' to be able to walk around the polished wooden floors. Paul wasn't very well after a dodgy prawn sandwich from London Stansted airport so celebrations for Mandy's birthday weren't high on the agenda and didn't feel like doing much partying after England were knocked out of the world cup....
Second stop was Balatonfured, another lakeside town right next to Tihany (a nature reserve/peninsula jutting out into Lake Balaton). Balatonfured didn't seem to have as much character as Keszthely but we had a great apartment overlooking the lake with a balcony, perfect for sunbathing when the sun came out. Our trip across to Tihany was nice but it was very touristy there and the sun was not shining that day so maybe we didn't catch it in it's best light. As Paul still wasn't feeling great, we decided to stay an extra day in Balatonfured watched some good old BBC TV (Eastenders) and sunbathed on the balcony.
Our final, and by far the best, stop in Hungary was Eger where we bagged a great modern apartment just a stone's throw away from the Valley of the Beautiful Women (Wineries) and with views over the old town. We had three hot and sunny days where we enjoyed walking around the old town and the castle, sunbathing and swimming at the 'beach' (swimming pools and gardens etc built in the middle of the town) and tasting wine at both the wineries in the valley and at the wine festival.
Left Hungary for Romania today and had an 'interesting' time trying to get over the border on the very limited public transport (and our very limited Hungarian). Ended up walking a few miles to get to and cross the border (where the border officials had a great time looking at all our stamps and visas in our passport, reeling off countries) then we managed to get a few lifts to finally arrive in Satu Mare ready for some adventures in Maramures, Romania.....
