Our last few days in India.. last minute flights to Varanasi as we were running short of time (no honestly, we really wanted to take that 40 hour bus....) What can we say about the place???... arrived at the airport, taxis asking a small Indian fortune, Paul already been sick twice on the plane, I know lets take a tuk-tuk (m/cycle with 2 seat cabin and hairdryer engine although louder than a plane), hang on this is a bit slow, taking over an hour to get to town, arriving now, mad traffic as usual, pollution and cow sh*te everywhere, dropped off on outskirts of town, long walk in 35degree heat, hassled by every tout in town, no we dont want to see your hotel.. or yours.. or yours.. walk past bathing ghats, awash with pilgrims beggars crazies, kids playing cricket, finally get a hotel room, next day explore town, find cheap tasty samosas, best lassis in India!! everyone has painted faces, bathing ghats are alive with people, kids flying kites, people praying swimming chanting and lighting candles, more lassis, tasty curries, visit cremation ghat and funeral pyres galore, boats on the ganges, kids still playing cricket, another lassi? why not! manage to watch first World Cup game - good, Germany win - bad, next day unable to watch England game - very bad, listen via internet in company of praying mantis - very strange.. England win - very good! Back to crazy Indian life - why are they still only talking about cricket??? Explore winding alleys, meet more crazy people, more mad painted faces, everyone in a rush or a trance, more lassis, still avoiding the cowpats!, find even better samosas, have a beer - still awful in this country! Already we have to leave, fight our way back thru crazy traffic to airport, yes we took another tuk-tuk we dont learn and it saves 100rupees!! Airport still full of freaks, orange freak with trident gets on the plane, how is 6ft orange trident allowed but not our small penknife? 2hrs later back in Delhi, now seems normal and ?quiet? by comparison - we are sad to be leaving such an amazing, unexpected, thrill-a-minute country but has been a great adventure!!!!
