We arrived in Shanghai on a Thursday night and enjoyed a weekend in a Youth Hostel near the Bund. We made friends with some of the people staying at the hostel and had a few good nights out, including one night at a club you pay 8 pounds to get in and it's free drinks all night. We walked around the city and looked at some 'sights' including People's Square where we saw the workmen having an afternoon nap in the sun. We visited 'The Bund' (old early century 'French style' buildings) along the river with skyscrapers on the opposite side in the Pudong financial district - this area was even more spectacular at night with all the bright neon lights on the Pearl Tower.
Sunday was A1 Grand Prix day, Paul and I were lucky enough to buy tickets outside for 8 pounds for both of us (and take the free shuttle bus there). These tickets were for the main stand and we had fantastic views of the pits, the podium and the start/finish line.. we were very lucky. There was an opening ceremony in the afternoon, featuring 100's of Chinese drummers and traditional Chinese theatre performances - Kung Fu, acrobatics, dancing. It was amazing. In the sprint race, Great Britain came 2nd so we saw our driver on the podium but in the Main race Great Britain didn't do so well but at least we came 3rd in the overall event (China happened to be the last race of the season).
We were fortunate enough to stay with Alison and Bryan (Michelle and Austin's friends) in their lovely apartment Mon-Fri and they looked after us very well. We were treated to some lovely home cooking, nice meals out and had a good laugh with them (football trivia!!). Alison took us out for a day to visit the JingMao tower in the Pudong Financial District... this skyscraper is taller than the Empire State Building and we got some great (if not a little hazy) views of Shanghai. We also had another walk along The Bund but this time we went inside some of the gorgeous buildings - one of the banks was so beautifully decorated inside. Mandy had her hair dyed brown whilst we were staying at Alison and Bryan's too.
Shanghai was a fun city and was made even more special by staying with Alison and Bryan who gave us a few insights into living in Shanghai - Thank you.
