After leaving Indonesia we headed straight to Semporna which is a little fishing village on the North East coast of Sabah. This is the jumping-off point for some more great diving at Sipadan & Mabul islands, the reason we had come here. We signed up with 'Scuba Junkie' to do 3 day trips out to the islands, doing 3 dives on each day. The waters surrounding Sipadan drop dramatically from a shallow reef to huge depths and the currents can be quite strong. These features and the islands distance from the mainland help to attract lots of big fish here and we saw lots of schooling fish as well. In 3 days we saw loads of Green & Hawksbill Turtles, lots of White-Tipped Reef Sharks (sometimes 10+ on one dive), three Giant Trevallys and lots of different types of Triggerfish, Angelfish and Batfish. Mabul is more famous for 'macro marine life' ie lots of small delicate things and here we saw lots of cleaner shrimps, Moray Eels, schools of Barracuda and two Harlequin Ghost Pipefish which are quite rare. The outstanding highlight though was on the last day at Sipadan when we saw a 4.5metre Whale Shark. This huge and graceful creature appeared from nowhere out of the blue and after initially swimming past us and disappearing he then returned to swim around us for 10minutes so we could have a really good look at him. Definitely one of the highlights of our trip so far.. don't miss the pictures and video we took of this !!!!
