Well we have just had a week in the small village of Villa La Angostura and although we only fitted in one day's snowboarding we had a great time that day and partied for the rest of the time!!
The Wednesday we arrived we checked into a lovely hostel (Italian Hostel) and went out with Jan and Petra (who were working at the resort) to Hub (a bar/restaurant) where there were a bunch of girls (on a hen night??) who were great fun. Mandy ended up dancing on the tables with them and we also bumped into Diego and Jenny that night, promising we'd be up on the mountain the next day snowboarding. After 'several' beers we made it home about 4am and didn't make it out of bed til 2pm the next day (hence no snowboarding on Thursday).
We snowboarded last friday in the Cerro Bayo resort. The first 'losing the helmet' story happened whilst we were on the bus on the way up to the resort when Mandy turned to Paul and said, ¨I left my helmet at the bus stop¨ so Paul got off the bus and went to get it and we met back up at the entrance to the resort after he'd hitched a lift up. We met up with some friends, Diego and Jenny (who we'd seen in other resorts and in the bar on weds) and they were our personal guides for the mountain taking us off piste with some of their other friends. When we went off piste, Mandy fell down the mountain (more of a forward somersault!) and this is when the second 'losing the helmet' story occurred. Mandy's helmet came loose and started rolling further and further down the mountain.. covered in snow (but not hurt), Mandy got back up to her feet and Fabian (Diego and Jenny's friend) and Diego went off in search of the helmet whilst the rest of us carried on to the bottom of the mountain... We had a fantastic day in the sunshine and enjoyed the resort and all the fantastic views you can get from the mountain. We went out agin on Friday night and joined in the festivities in Hub (including guess the Madonna video - no sound just pictures!!) and rolled into bed at 4.30am hence yet again we didn't make it up the mountain.
It was quite fortunate that we didn't go snowboarding on saturday as there was a bad accident where the cable on one of the cahirlifts de-railed, sending several of the chairlifts plummeting to the ground. About 20 people were hurt but fortunately noone was killed. Sunday and Monday were days when we waited about in Villa La Angostura to see if they were going to re-open the resort (as they had said it would be Monday afternoon) and we also went for a walk to the lake and enjoyed the spectacular views of the Nahuel Huapi region - lots of mountains and lakes and trees with clear blue skies. Unfortunately they have decided at Cerro Bayo that they probably won't open the resort again til next season as they need to review all of the chairlifts and do proper safety checks etc (as apparently there haven't been proper checks made for the last 2 years!!).
So we have moved back to San Martin de los Andes to snowboard at Chapelc again and are due 2 foot of snow over the weekend... yippee!!
