With the arrival of the Argentinian holiday season we decided to leave Bariloche and head further south into Patagonia. A 5hr bus ride brought us to the town of Esquel, a small town where very few tourists visit but it does have its attractions - the local parilla (BBQ restaurant) has a huge plastic cow outside it!! There is also a train called the Patagonian Express which runs at the weekend. After a couple of days in a grungy hostel we found a lovely shared apartment where we share a bathroom and large kitchen (with cable tv) and have our own large double room. It's a bargain at only 40pesos a night (8pounds) so we have booked it for the whole week. The ski resort here (La Hoya) is smaller and cheaper with only 3 chairlifts but numerous other types of 'drag' lifts which aren't designed for snowboarders so we have been having lots of fun falling off them half way up!! The snow here is good and the pistes are well looked after and a lot smoother than the ones at Bariloche. Just had a great weekend here with our friend Kim who escaped from Bariloche for the weekend and came down to board with us. There is a huge off-piste area here but unfortunately no sign of any fresh snow so we couldn't board as much of it as we would have liked. On a day off from boarding we took a bus to the small town Trevelin which is only 30mins away. Trevelin has a big Welsh community who emmigrated in the late 1800īs and they are very proud of their history. We visited the Regional Museum which had lots of old Welsh items from everyday items like old grammaphones to huge big steam tractors. Back in Esquel we also saw the 'Viejo Expreso Patagonico' (Old Patagonian Express) which is an old steam train running on the smallest gauge train track in the world - it used to be everyday transport through the region!!
